Planning your Treatment
The relevant information following physical examination of the
legs, general medical examination and the picture of blood flow
or ‘duplex mapping’ made of the abnormal blood flow in veins
enables the specialist to plan appropriate treatment that reduces
the risk of future recurrence. Treatment for varicose veins is of
different parts; initially treating the larger inner vein that has the
valve damage and then treating the visible lumpy veins under
the skin; often both are performed at the same time. Once this
has healed, the spider veins are then dealt with.
It is important to understand that varicose veins are not the same
in every person and every person with varicose veins is not the
same. The management option of each patient will differ
depending upon individual clinical need, associated medical
condition, previous vein surgery, personal preference, etc.
Similarly, the clinical and cosmetic outcome will differ in every
person undergoing treatment depending on initial status of the
vein, type of procedure and individual healing process.
All surgeons may not offer the newer minimally invasive
treatments for varicose veins and a good outcome can be
obtained from any of these varicose vein operations as long as
the procedure is carried out to a good standard.
You can also at this stage discuss and choose the option of
anaesthesia either general anaesthesia or local anaesthesia or
the popular twilight technique of combining sedation with local
anaesthesia.
